Stuck between too much dye and not enough? Here’s how to get the perfect balance
Bath bombs are loved by many because of their beautiful designs, delicious scents and, most importantly, their fizz and foam. However, the idea of staining a customer’s bathtub and skin can put many creators off creating their own range.
Although the process requires some careful selection of ingredients and techniques, it can be done. Here’s a guide on how to achieve those bright, beautiful bath bombs without the worry of staining.

Choosing the Right Colourants
The first step in making non-staining bath bombs is selecting the right colourants. For example, water-soluble dyes are a great choice as they dissolve completely in water, reducing the risk of staining. Additionally, mica powders can add a beautiful shimmer without causing stains if used sparingly and properly mixed with other ingredients.
Avoid using food colouring or craft dyes, as they can easily stain both your skin and bathtub. Look for colourants specifically designed for bath bombs and soaps, as these are formulated to be safe and non-staining.
Proper Mixing Techniques
Make sure to thoroughly mix your dry ingredients together before adding your chosen colourant to achieve a consistent colour. This also helps to avoid concentrated spots of colour that could cause staining.
Testing Your Bath Bombs
Before making a large batch, it’s wise to test your bath bombs to ensure they don’t stain.
Make a small test batch and use one in your bathtub, paying attention to any residue left behind. If you notice any staining, you may need to adjust the amount or type of colourant you’re using.
Adding Polysorbate 80
One of the best ingredients to include in your bath bombs to prevent staining is Polysorbate 80. This emulsifier helps to disperse colourants and oils evenly in the water, preventing them from clinging to the sides of your tub or your skin.
Cleaning and Maintenance
It might be a good idea to add a disclaimer to your products as, even with all the precautions, a build-up of oils and soap scum in a bathtub can trap colourants. It’s also best to rinse the tub immediately with warm water after using a bath bomb to wash away any residual colour
