You can choose your own scents, flavours and essential oils to make the perfect product! And you are avoiding harsh chemicals that could be found in mass produced soaps.
  • Better For The Environment – Chemicals used in the manufacturing process of shop bought soaps and other products can be harmful to the environment, and home making these products is a good way of remaining eco conscious.

Additionally, each batch of soap may last you a while, and your ingredients shouldn’t go off for a while either, so your homemade products can go a long way, saving you money overall.

What Soap And Bath Bomb Supplies Do I Need?

Making Soap

There are many recipes and tutorials out there when it comes to making your own soap, we’ve showcased a few very simple and easy recipes to help you along the way if you’re a beginner.

The easiest soaps to make are ones that come with a premade soap base. The process of making these soaps is very simple, and is called a melt and pour soap. You simply need to cut the premade soap base into chunks, melt it in the microwave and add your scents, dyes or other ingredients! Once you have created the perfect melted mixture, you can pour this into your soap moulds and leave it to set. Once set, simply cut up your soap into equal bars and enjoy!

A more complicated method that involves a few more ingredients is cold process soap making. In this recipe, you will need:

  • Oils
  • Lye
  • Butters
  • Additional scents and ingredients

Cold process soap is fun to make and only requires a little more attention than melt and pour soap. You can use a range of natural ingredients for scent and colouring, allowing you to get creative with your soaps and have fun with your designs.

In addition to cold process soap and melt and pour soap, there is also hot process soap making. This process is a little more complicated and time consuming, however your soap is sure to be just as stunning!

Making Bath Bombs

Just like soap making, making your own bath bombs allows you to get experimental with colours, scents and most importantly, fizz!

The ingredients you will need for your bath bomb will include:

  • Bicarbonate of soda
  • Citric acid
  • SLSA powder
  • Mica powder
  • Fragrance oil

We have broken down the process into very brief steps, however you can find a range of different recipes and tutorials online to help you!

  • To start, mix your SLSA powder, bicarbonate of soda and your citric acid in a bowl
  • Then, you can pour in your fragrance oil (don’t be afraid to experiment with scents) and be sure to get rid of any lumps
  • Split your mixture evenly into two bowls
  • Now you can add your mica powder colouring to each bowl, or just one bowl to create the desired colour of your bath bomb!
  • Once you’re happy with your colour, spray a little water into each bowl and mix until your mixture holds together (like a snowball)
  • Now you can add your coloured mixes to your mould and get creative with your design. Be sure to pack your mixtures as tightly as possible, and leave to set overnight.
  • Once fully set, you can remove the mould and enjoy your new bath bomb!

Soap & Bath Bomb Dyes

There are a few options when it comes to colouring your soap or bath bomb, so we’ve broken down a few of the most common options.

Mica Powders – These are a very common way of colouring your homemade products. Coloured micas, also known as pearlescents are  fine mica powders that are widely used in a range of cosmetics. They can be added to your soaps or bath bombs for vibrant colours and you can mix them together to create more interesting colours too.

Pigments – These are great for strong and vibrant colours, and pigments are usually found in natural sources. These colours are the least likely to fade as they have a high resistance to acid and alkali.

Powdered Dyes – These dyes are another good option for colouring your home made products. They are usually used by being diluted in water and then applied to the product. The only issue with these dyes is that they can sometimes bleed or leak colour.

Soap & Bath Bomb Kits

If you’re feeling overwhelmed or unsure where to start on your soap making or bath bomb journey, then there are a range of soap making and bath bomb making kits available for you to try!
