Rise and Shine: A Complete Guide To Bath Bomb Glitter and Designs

Whether you need to relax and unwind after a long day at work or simply fancy investing in a little self-care, bath bombs are the ultimate indulgent treat suitable for everyone to enjoy. Available in an exciting array of glitters and designs, you’re guaranteed to find something perfect for you. Better still, these bathtime goodies are easy to design and make yourself! Read on to learn more about the intoxicating world of bath bombs – from their many benefits to how they are made – and discover how to create the ultimate bath bomb of your dreams.

What is a bath bomb?

A bath bomb is a spherical blend of fragrant and soothing oils and extracts that you can add to your bathtub before bathing. Its main ingredients are sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) and citric acid – this explains the characteristic fizzing effect that bath bombs create. When dropped in water, the reaction will occur, causing the bath bomb to dissolve completely and release the ingredients inside.

The benefits of bath bombs

Skincare friendly and available in a delightful array of colours, shapes and designs, bath bombs are by far among the most popular bathing products. Here’s a few of their many benefits:

  • Detox your skin – bath bombs contain baking soda, which is known to have many health advantages. It has a soothing effect and is effective at removing dirt and toxins from your skin, as well as helping neutralise and balance pH levels.
  • Relax your body and mind – bath bombs are famous for their calming properties and ability to alleviate your stresses and worries. Using a fizzy bath bomb and soaking inside a warm bath for extended periods of time is a simple way to uplift your mood while healing tensions and soreness. For an enhanced experience, light candles and listen to your favourite music to replicate a spa-like atmosphere.
  • Sort out dry skin – if your skin is looking a little dry and patchy, a bath bomb could be the perfect solution. It helps loosen damaged layers of skin, while the healing oils they contain will moisturise your skin and keep it soft and supple.

How are bath bombs made?

Bath bombs are a lot easier to make than you may imagine – you can even do it from the comfort of your own home. Find out everything you need to know below:

Ingredients you’ll need

You’ll normally need these basic ingredients when making bath bombs at home:

  • 100g bicarbonate of soda
  • 50g citric acid
  • 25g cornflour
  • 25g epsom salt (optional)
  • 2 tbsp oil, such as sunflower, vegetable or olive
  • ¼ tsp essential oils, such as lavender, orange or chamomile
  • A few drops of liquid food colouring or cosmetic dye (make sure it’s suitable for contact with skin)
  • Decorations, such as lavender, rose petals or glitter (optional)

Purchasing our Bath Bomb Ingredient Pack is one of the most cost-effective ways to buy the ingredients for our bath bomb assessments.

These are sold in packs of 250s, 500s and 1,000s (g / ml) and they include Kaolin Clay, Slsa, Polysorbate 80, and Apricot Kernel Oil. The pack size means you get one of each in that size e.g. 1,000 packs would include 1kg Kaolin, 1kg Slsa, 1L Apricot Kernel, and 1L Polysorbate 80.

We also stock over 400 moulds, a huge variety of fragrance oils, glow-in-the-dark pigments, neon non-bleeds and much more. Use them to create endless combinations of high-quality, unique bath and body creations, from pastel whipped soaps to highlighter-bright bath bombs.

Methodology

When it comes to actually making your bath bombs, you should typically follow these instructions:

  • With the exception of the citric acid, combine your dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl.
  • In a different mixing bowl, pour in all of your wet ingredients and mix them until combined.
  • Pour the liquid mixture into your bowl of dry ingredients, and whisk to meld the two together. Once combined, slowly add the citric acid and continue blending. You may notice a slight buzzing because of the citric acid, but no need to panic – this is a normal chemical reaction.
  • Pour the mixture into your moulds; don’t be afraid to overfill them slightly. Use a spoon to press the mixture into the mould as tightly as possible to reduce the risk of breakage or crumbling. You should then freeze for one hour.
  • Remove the bombs from their moulds, place them onto wax paper and leave them to dry overnight. Alternatively, you can leave the mixture in its mould and place it in the freezer for an hour. After freezing, remove the bath bombs from the moulds and there you have it!

What are some creative ideas I could try?

When it comes to creating bath bombs, your options are limitless. If you need a little inspiration, read these tips on generating imaginative designs.

Experiment with colour combinations

From vibrant pops of colour to more tranquil tones, the colour of your bath bomb shapes the entire bath time experience. You should experiment with different colour combinations to work out which looks generate the most aesthetically pleasing results. Remember, before playing around with colour palettes you should reintroduce yourself to the colour wheel. This will help you determine complementary colours and work out what looks good.

Here at Soak Rochford, we stock a wide range of vibrant water soluble dyes with many purposes. These are extremely cost effective, as they are very concentrated, and a little goes a long way.

Try different moulds

The assortment of moulds available out there means you can create almost any shaped bath bomb you desire. Maybe you’re intent on designing a mystical dragon egg for your little one or perhaps you’re seeking a heart-shaped mould to fulfil a romantic creation. Whatever you’re after, Soak Rochford has a comprehensive variety of bath bomb moulds that are guaranteed to meet your individual needs and requirements.

Don’t forget fragrance

Ideally, you want your bath bombs to smell heavenly, so it’s important to remember to add fragrance oils. Our fragrance oils here at Soak Rochford definitely pack a punch – they’re super concentrated so work out to be very cost effective too. From alluring scents like Midnight Opium to fruity favours like Very Cherry, we’ve got everything you need to create your ideal bath bomb.

Add some glitter

Everyone needs some sparkle in their life from time to time. Whether you’re after a dust of gold or some silver shine, adding glitter to your bath bombs is a great way to bring a little bit of magic to your bath time routine.

Use Mica powder

If you’re after a shimmery effect, why not use Mica powder? Mica is a naturally occurring mineral found in rocks all over the world. These small, shiny flakes from the rocks are then ground down to form mica powder. Mica powders are a wonderful way to naturally colour bath bombs with a little something special. Plus, if you mix the Mica powder with alcohol, you can also paint beautiful details onto bath bombs.

At Soak Rochford, our Mica Assessment Pack has everything you need to create beautiful bath bombs to wow your friends and family. Enjoy Mica powder in an assortment of colours, including Intergalactic Golden Blue, Asteroid Gold and North Star Silver.
